From Cotton to Casinos
August 01, 2004
With the urbanization of rural farmland in the Rio Grande Valley, once prevalent revenue sources like cotton production are slowly receding, leaving a void for other sources of income for the Valley's residents to consider.
Ron interviewed Gerald Miligan, the General Manager of the Lyford Gin, a major processor of the Valley's cotton crops for sale on the world market, who supports the alternative for state income tax provided by leaglised gambling. Gerald expounded on his gin, and the processes which are used to put cotton grown in the Valley into a more managable medium for commercial use.
The remainder of this edition featured Doyle Wells, and his wife Dolores, who are both business owners on South Padre Island. There is a serious effort and discussion by state legislators and S.P.I. residents to allow for the authorization of legalised gambling to help support state income and tourist migration to the island. With Mexico preparing for their own gambling casinos, many people in the Valley are wanting the Texas Legislature to "hurry up" and legalize gambling within certain areas of this state to salvage money that will be lost to either Las Vegas, Nevada, and/or Mexico.
