US-VISIT: No Visit to US?

September 19, 2004

On this edition of "Valley Newsline with Ron Whitlock", Dennis Nixon, Chairman of the Alliance for Security and Trade, and also the President and C.E.O. of the International Bank of Commerce (IBC), is calling on the Department of Homeland Security to postpone the planned implementation of U.S.VISIT on December 31st of this year.  Also appearing on this show was Gerald Schwebel, the Executive Vice-President of IBC.  Most of this show was filmed from Nixon's office in Laredo.  Both are considered the leading general public experts on the U.S.-VISIT issue and it's potential adverse economic impact if implemented as scheduled.

U.S.VISIT is considered such an important topic that Nixon and Schwebel are being presented by "Valley Newsline with Ron Whitlock" in a two part program, with the second portion of the program to air next Sunday, September 26th. Also covered is Senator John Cornyn's report that the Director of the Department of Homeland Security, Tom Ridge, has verbally agreed that at some unspecified time, Mexican Nationals shall be granted 6 months "parity" visitation rights similar to that granted Canadians.

Of considerable import to this show was the recent release of the Turner Report (which, once we at "Valley NewLine" have it in an "e-friendly" format, will post it here on our site post haste), detailing the probable negative economic imact anticipated from US-VISIT's procedural consequences.  Please see also the online article "Turner lambastes US-VISIT."

For more background information, please visit our past shows on US-VISIT "US-VISIT Approaches" (April 25, 2004), "US-VISIT Revisited (November 2, 2003), and/or "US-VISIT...An Economic Disaster for the Valley?" (September 14, 2003).

We are also in the process of scanning the entire report put out by the Alliance for Security & Trade for posting here, so continue to check back here for any updates.  For now, you can read their short prelude briefing to their booklet entitled "The Answer."
