The Valley Voted in 2004

November 07, 2004

The Valley's votes are in, and it was time for assessment of where the Rio Grande Valley of Texas stands politically for the next two-four years.

Ron discussed this issue with Texas State Representative Aaron Pena, and the knowledgable Dr. Samuel Freeman, a Political Science professor at the University of Texas - Pan American.

On an interesting note, debate was encouraged on whether the Electoral college system of tabulating points for Presidential elections is antiquated and in need of change.  A report by George C. Edwards III, a Political Science professor in charge of Presidential Studies at Texas A&M, claims just that, and goes even further in explaining how it steals democracy away from the voters in his book Why the Electoral College is Bad for America.

The argument can be made that if we were to split Texas's electoral votes by popular vote, as Maine does and as Colorado voted against doing, then the Rio Grande Valley of Texas would receive much more attention from candidates due to the large population we have here, making our issues matter!
