CHRISTMAS AT THE CAPITOL
This edition featured a Christmas tour of the Governor's mansion in Austin with Governor Perry and First Lady of Texas Anita Perry, a walk-through of the Speaker of the House of Representatives' "apartment" in the Capitol (which is the only living quarters for a Speaker of the House located within a state Capitol building in the entire United States) guided by the Speaker's wife Nadine Craddick and the Speaker of the House himself, Tom Craddick, finishing off with a showcase of the Christmas tree in the Chamber of the House of Representatives in the Capitol!
The unique and intimate look inside these two historic Austin residences offered state-wide viewers what may be their first-ever peek of what its like to live there, and how both the Mansion and the Speakers Apartment and Texas House Chamber are decorated for the season. While both Perry and Craddick offer interesting historical tid-bits about their official state-provided quarters, it is their wives Anita and Nadine that stole the limelight with their charming descriptions and anecdotes about the antiques, furnishings and background about the Governor's Mansion and the Speaker's Apartment.
In a Christmas gift to the people of Texas via the show notes, secret family recipes of First Lady Anita Perry's Buttermilk Pie; the Craddicks offer viewers holiday recipe's of Craddick Chocolate Cake and Craddick Sugar Cookies that have been in their family for generations. Ron also dropped off fresh Texas Ruby Red grapefruit from the Rio Grande Valley to grace their meals during their Christmas celebrations.
While most visitors to the State Capitol in Austin are aware of the Governor's Mansion, which sits near the Capitol and was first occupied by Governor and Former Republic of Texas President Sam Houston, many are totally unaware of the fact that the Speaker's Apartment inside the Capitol even exists. It was created in l904 by then Speaker Pat Neff, who later also lived in the Mansion after being elected Governor of Texas
It is the only personal apartment inside a State Capitol anywhere in the USA.
